Few cities in southern Europe offer a waterfront walk as long, accessible, and genuinely beautiful as the one running along the eastern coast of Thessaloniki. Starting at the iconic White Tower and stretching all the way south to the Nea Krini pier, the Eastern Thessaloniki seaside walks cover roughly 12 km of uninterrupted coastline , a continuous ribbon of promenades, coastal paths, marina edges, and fishing quays that changes character every few hundred metres.
Walking is not just exercise in Thessaloniki , it is a social institution. The Greek tradition of the volta (the evening promenade) is nowhere more alive than on the eastern waterfront, where residents of all ages , families, couples, students, elderly residents , take to the path as the sun begins its descent over the gulf. The Eastern Thessaloniki seaside walks are embedded in the daily rhythm of everyone who lives along this coast: the commute that isn’t a commute, the gym that doesn’t feel like a gym, and the social connector that keeps neighbourhoods from becoming anonymous.
The Nea Paralia (New Waterfront), completed in 2013, is organised into a series of themed gardens including the Garden of Sand, the Garden of Roses, the Garden of Music, and the Sculpture Park, each designed by a different architect. Walking the full length at a relaxed pace takes 60 to 75 minutes. Best walked in the early morning before crowds arrive, or at sunset for the city’s famous golden-hour waterfront atmosphere.
Where the official Nea Paralia ends, the coast continues through the Kalamaria waterfront. This stretch passes old fishing piers, the Kodra Cultural Centre, and spacious waterfront cafe-bars. It is quieter, more residential, and exactly the kind of place where you understand why people choose the eastern coast over the centre.
The final stretch is the most authentic and least visited by outsiders. Narrow coastal tracks pass Aretsou Beach, rocky fishing spots, and the informal paths of Nea Krini, ending at the 200-metre pier. Walking to the pier end in the early evening, with the smell of charcoal from nearby tavernas and the fishing boats returning, is one of those quietly unforgettable Thessaloniki experiences.
One of the pleasures of the Eastern Thessaloniki seaside walks is that the route is lined with opportunities to eat and drink well at every stage. Start with koulouri carts at the beginning of the Nea Paralia , the sesame-covered bread rings that are the quintessential Thessaloniki walking snack. Waterfront cafés in Kalamaria serve freddo cappuccino and light breakfast plates from 8:00 AM.
Meze tavernas in the Aretsou area are perfect for a mid-walk stop: grilled octopus, cold tsipouro, and platters of mezedes best enjoyed at an outdoor table as the sun goes down. At the end of the route, the waterfront tavernas of Nea Krini serve the freshest grilled fish in the city , sold by weight, priced fairly, eaten at plastic tables facing the water with the fishing boats as the backdrop. A full coastal walk with proper food stops can easily fill an entire afternoon and evening, which is exactly how many residents of the eastern coast spend a Saturday.
A morning walk from the White Tower to the Concert Hall and back , 10 km round trip , is one of the most energising ways to start a day in Thessaloniki. Many students and residents do this route two or three times a week as a meditative morning ritual, returning home before 9:00 AM with a coffee and a koulouri from one of the Nea Paralia carts.
In the evenings, the volta fills the path with the entire neighbourhood. The transition from afternoon cafe culture to the evening walk to a waterfront dinner happens seamlessly and naturally. No special occasion is required. A Tuesday in May is enough. The Eastern Thessaloniki seaside walks do not need to be planned; they happen because the sea is there and because it is impossible to ignore once you live beside it.
